Academy members: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday announced its prestigious list of invitees consisting of 298 new members. In a remarkable achievement for Indian cinema, Karan Johar, Ram Charan, Jr NTR, and Mani Ratnam among others have made it to the list. The list also includes international icons such as Taylor Swift, Ke Huy Qwan, Austin Butler, and more.
Indian celebs invited by The Academy
The Indian cinema is in its golden period and many celebs from the country making it to The Academ’s list of invitees is a testament to the same. In an astounding feat, RRR stars Jr NTR and Ram Charan, renowned filmmakers Mani Ratnam, Shaunak Sen, and Karan Johar, and cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar are the Indian celebs who have been bestowed with this honor. The membership section is held on the basis of professional metrics, with an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion, and equity. The Academy now consists of 10,000 members who vote in various categories to choose a winner among shortlisted and nominated cinematic spectacles.
SS Rajamouli missing from the list?
Filmmaker SS Rajamouli, whose vision RRR brought numerous accolades to India including its song ‘Naatu Naatu’ winning an Oscar in the ‘Best Original Song’ Category, has not been included in the list. This comes as a surprise to many who are familiar with the celebrated filmmaker’s commitment to inclusivity.
Academy welcomes new invitees
The Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang in a joint statement said, “The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership. They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines, and have made a vital impact on arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide.”
The Oscars will be held on March 10 in 2024.
