Sam Bahadur Movie Review: Vicky Kaushal’s latest brings one of his best performances on screen in the action-hero film, Sam Bahadur. Director, Meghna Gulzar is back to do what she does best in this war drama. Additionally, movie stars Vicky Kaushal along with the Dangal girls, Sanya Malhotra, and Fatima Sana Shaikh. This biopic was released on 1st December and saw a clash with the other highly anticipated Ranbir Kapoor film, Animal. However, the film does not come close to Vicky Kaushal’s 2019 masterpiece, Uri: The Surgical Strike
Sam Bahadur Plot
Sam Bahadur is a biopic based on the real-life soldier, Sam Manekshaw. Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw was the chief of the Indian Army during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, where he led the Indian army to victory. Moreover, he was the first Indian army officer to receive the post of Field Marshall. Due to his immense bravery and courage shown during the war, he is often known as ‘Sam Bahadur’. In the movie, Vicky Kaushal portrays this gallant officer, where Meghna Gulzar showcases his life from his childhood to the end of the war.
Themes
The ongoing themes of the film are bravery, patriotism and leadership. The gallant bravery and optimism of the character shines throughout the film. Moreover, it brought a sense of patriotism during the war, that united the members, despite their caste and religion. Furthermore, the strong leadership qualities of the character lead the army team to victory.
Positives
This Meghna Gulzar war-drama deals with the themes of war with utmost sensitivity. Although a war-drama, it does not glorify violence which is usually common in movies of this genre. Moreover, this story is powerfully led by the performances of the actors Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh. However, Vicky Kaushal steals the show by portraying the lead character with authenticity and grace, marking this role as one of his best performances.
Negatives
The movie carefully handles the character of Sam Manekshaw. Instead of making him out to be a super-human, out-of-this-world war hero, he is shown as a mere human being with valiant bravery. However, the film becomes boring after every two scenes and loses the true magic of War Drama.
Final Remarks
Although it is a treat to watch Vicky Kaushal portray this character on screen, the film does not bring anything extraordinary that makes it worth watching or skipping. Thus, it does not come close to Uri: The Surgical Strike.
