In a recent appearance on Neha Dhupia’s show No Filter Neha, Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor didn’t hold back in his criticism of the prevalent ‘camp culture’ in the industry. The Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya star, known for his candidness, expressed his views on the challenges faced by outsiders in Bollywood and urged for a more inclusive approach.
Struggles of an Outsider
Reflecting on his own journey, Shahid shared anecdotes from his early days in Mumbai, highlighting the struggles he faced as an outsider. “Maybe I don’t have the qualities to be a campy person,” Shahid remarked, revealing how his Delhi accent and outsider status made him a target for exclusion and mistreatment. Recalling his childhood experiences of constantly shifting homes and seeking acceptance, he emphasized the difficulty of being embraced by established circles in the industry.
Bollywood’s ‘School-like’ Environment
Drawing parallels between the industry and a school environment, Shahid Kapoor emphasized the reluctance of insiders to accept newcomers easily. He likened his eventual acceptance in Shiamak Davar’s dance academy and college to finding a sense of belonging, ultimately leading him to pursue acting. However, he lamented the tendency within Bollywood to resist newcomers and maintain closed circles, hindering creative collaboration and inclusivity.

Expressing his disapproval of the camp structure, Shahid emphasized the importance of openness and collaboration in the industry. He denounced the practice of belittling or excluding others, advocating for a culture where individuals are free to work with whomever they choose. Refusing to tolerate bullying, Shahid asserted his confidence in standing up against any form of intimidation, signaling his commitment to promoting a more equitable and respectful environment in Bollywood.
