Spirited Review: Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell tried to make a Christmas musical based upon the Christmas Carol’s story.
Ryan Reynolds and a group of other authors have tweaked Charles Dickens famous tale. In Will Ferrell’s Spirited, the Ghost of Christmas Present (played by Ferrell) is a careful take on one significant soul-changing task before retiring. This time, he wants to redeem someone who can change the world more than just a bad neighbour.

Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds), a PR consultant who has already been labelled as “unredeemable,” enters his life soon. The ideal candidate for Present, who chooses to take on Briggs as his final task, is someone who makes a living off of creating up controversy and stirring up online outrage to aid his clients. This is followed by a musical journey as Present, the Ghost of Christmas Past (Sunita Mani), and Future (Tracy Morgan) attempt to transform Briggs into a good human being.
Story of Spirited
In the movie Spirited, the revenge handed out on Christmas Eve by the ghosts of the past, present, and future is presented as a yearly event organised by a group that both hires new ghosts and assigns the existing ones to their human targets. As we first meet Ferrell’s Present, he has been making people into good people for decades. Although retirement would allow him to return to earth and live a human life, he is eager to take on one last significant task. Reynolds isn’t the only quick-witted PR expert we’ve seen; in fact, he is a familiar face.

The most confusing aspect about Spirited is that it never quite manages to strike a balance between being a Christmas musical and a traditional Christmas fun. The musical portion of the movie doesn’t fit well since there are times when we lose sight of the fact that the movie is meant to be a Christmas musical. Additionally, it’s unclear whether the movie is entirely intended for family viewers given that some of the humour doesn’t fit in the family-friendly category.
Expectations from the movie are not fulfilled
The written promises made by Spirited are not fully fulfilled. Given Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds amazing talents, it seems unlikely that they couldn’t have created a holiday musical that would have been a smash hit. This movie isn’t a delightful ride from beginning to end like Will Ferrell’s Elf. This movie may disappoint more than it will raise our spirits for Christmas because of the stunted character development and the script’s seeming effort to pull in all directions.
