Supreme Court on SRK: Celebrities have rights like all the other citizens of the country and they cannot be made vicariously culpable, the Supreme Court said on Monday, as it declined to revive a criminal case against actor Shah Rukh Khan for triggering a melee at Vadodra railway station in the year 2017 while promoting his film, Raees. During the promotion, a man had died of heart attack. “What was the fault of this man (SRK)? Just because he is a celebrity doesn’t mean that he has no rights,” the bench of justice Ajay Rastogi and CT Ravi Kumar said this while affirming the Gujarat high court order that denied the criminal case against the actor in April.
Court said, “Let us focus on important subjects”
The court said that Shah Rukh Khan could not be expected to ensure everyone’s safety when he is travelling by train. “If somebody travels by train then there is no personal guarantee. A celebrity has equal rights like every other citizen of the country.” Bench added further, “He (SRK) is a celebrity, that doesn’t mean that he can control everything. Let us focus on more important subjects that deserve attention and time.”
