The Flash: The latest superhero blockbuster, presents itself as a mixed bag, impressing us with its high-quality digital FX while simultaneously confusing us with its misguided narrative decisions. While Ezra Miller’s performance as the protagonist, Barry Allen, shines, the film’s slapstick comedy, heavy metal action, and philosophical sci-fi themes aren’t as well-balanced as one might hope.
Running Against the Clock: The Film’s Time-Twisting Narrative
The film’s storyline delves into the fascinating concepts of time travel and alternate realities. Barry Allen, in his quest to right the past wrongs that tore his family apart, manipulates time using his Flash powers. This results in an alternate universe where he encounters a different version of himself. Barry’s foray into time manipulation and its consequences draw parallels to classic science fiction narratives, such as Ray Bradbury’s “The Sound of Thunder”.
Memorable Performances Amidst an Unsteady Plot
While the plot may waver, Ezra Miller’s portrayal of both versions of Barry Allen is commendable. The film also surprises audiences by introducing an older Batman, portrayed by Michael Keaton, a throwback to the 1980s Tim Burton films. The performances are arguably the film’s strong suit, showcasing the emotional depth and maturity of the characters.
The Flash’s Philosophical Dilemma
“The Flash” raises philosophical and scientific questions around time travel, similar to Mary Shelley’s classic “Frankenstein”. The film handles these discussions remarkably well, offering a somewhat hopeful ending without negating the implications it raises. However, it falls short when it comes to handling its rich source material, frequently introducing callbacks to older DC comic adaptations.
Technological Woes: CGI Overkill?
Unfortunately, the film’s reliance on CGI takes a toll on its quality, particularly during the larger battle sequences. The technology used to recreate deceased actors and to visualise alternate realities appears to be half-baked. The end result often borders on the creepy and unreal, breaking the suspension of disbelief that’s essential for any superhero film.
“The Flash” certainly pushes the boundaries of superhero cinema with its complex narrative and explorations into time travel. However, its inconsistent execution, combined with questionable CGI choices, might leave audiences wishing for a reset button of their own.
