The Kerala Story: Even before its release, the film The Kerala Story has triggered a political storm in the country. However On Tuesday, Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) awarded it an ‘A’ certificate.
It also asked the makers of the film to remove 10 scenes which includes an interview with a former Kerala chief minister, supposed to be VS Achuthanandan. The Censor Board also sought from the makers to submit documentary proof of the statistics mentioned in the film’s trailer.
SC refuses to stay release of the film
On the other hand, the Supreme Court today refused to entertain a plea seeking stay on release of the controversial film. The court asked the petitioner to approach appropriate forum. “We cannot tag it. Why don’t you move the concerned High Court first. See a board has certified it through a process,” a bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna remarked.
The film will release on Friday, May 5.
What’s the controversy?
Sudipto Sen’s directorial courted controversy soon after its trailer was released last year. It is about the story of four women and how from being regular college students in Kerala, they became part of a terror organisation.
A scene which is believed to have been deleted, had “dialogues and inappropriate references to all Hindu Gods”. Some dialogues were also apparently tweaked.
The TV interview with a former Kerala CM quoted him saying that Kerala over the next two decades would become a Muslim-majority state as youngsters were being influenced to convert to Islam. The CBFC ordered that this entire TV interview be deleted from the film.
Recently, taking to Twitter, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor shared the poster of the film and wrote, “It may be *your* Kerala story. It is not *our* Kerala story.”
Adah Sharma defends film
Speaking about the controversy, actress Adah Sharma, who is playing the role of a Hindu Malayali nurse said, “Our film is about girls getting drugged, brainwashed, raped, human trafficking, forcefully impregnated and then raped again by multiple people sometimes, the child they deliver been taken away and them being made suicide bombers.”
“It’s about life and death! for the few who are saying its propaganda, I guess once they watch the film with all the facts they will say otherwise.”
Adah plays the role of Fathima Ba, a Malayali nurse, who converts to Islam and joins the Islamic State. She is among the 32,000 women who went missing from Kerala and then turned into an IS terrorist. Besides Adah, the film also features Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani and Siddhi Idnani.
