The Kerala Story collection Day 1: The controversial film The Kerala Story collection Day 1 took everyone by surprise. Actor Adah Sharma’s film, which released in theatres on Friday amid much controversy, reportedly raked in Rs 7.50-8 crore on the opening day. This makes the movie the fifth-highest grosser on the opening day for a Hindi film in 2023.
Written and directed by Sudipto Sen, The Kerala Story sperked controversy ever since its controversial trailer was unveiled by the makers. The movie is based on the forced conversion of non-Muslim girls in Kerala. Opponents have accused the film of “falsely claiming” that 32,000 women got radicalised and were deployed in terror missions.
Clears all hurdles
However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) found it suitable for public exhibition and gave it an A certificate. On the other side, the Supreme Court rejected a string of petitions demanding a stay on its release.
Amid all this, the movie finally hit the cinema halls on May 5.
On its opening day the movie grossed around Rs 7.50-8 crore. With this, the multi-lingual movie recorded the fifth-highest opening for a Hindi film in 2023.
It remains to be seen if positive word of mouth will help the film break records at the box office. For now, it is looking good for Sudipto Sen’s The Kerala Story.
Leaves Shehzada, Selfiee behind
The other biggest openers of this year are superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (Rs 55 crore), Salman Khan-starrer Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (Rs 15.81 crore), Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s romance drama TJMM (Rs 15.7 crore), and Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa (Rs 11.20 crore).
It is worth noting that 2023 has not been a great year for Hindi-language films. Much-hyped masala entertainers like Shehzada starring Kartik Aaryan and Akshay Kumar-Emraan Hashmi flick Selfiee had also not had an opening day as good as Adah’s The Kerala Story.
