The Kerala Story: The makers of “The Kerala Story” intend to petition the Supreme Court to have the West Bengal film ban lifted. Through their appeal, the filmmakers will also demand that the state of Tamil Nadu send security to theatres showing the film there. In order to prevent “any incident of hatred and violence,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday ordered an immediate ban on the screening of the divisive movie “The Kerala Story” in the state.
Union Minister questions TMC leader’s motive behind banning ‘The Kerala Story’
As a result, West Bengal became the first state to outlaw the movie. Union Minister Anurag Thakur questioned why the Trinamool Congress(TMC) leader would have sympathy for terrorist organisations rather than the young girls from Kerala. Thakur also saw the movie in a Delhi movie theatre. Vipul Shah, the film’s producer, stated that ‘they would file a lawsuit to challenge the TMC government’s ban.’ ‘The CM has ordered an immediate ban on screening of “The Kerala Story” in order to prevent any incidents of hatred and violence and to maintain peace in the state. Any movie theatre that violates the ban will face consequences,’ the West Bengal government official told PTI.
‘The Kerala Story’ depicts the ordeal of three women trafficked to ISIS camps
At a news conference earlier in the day, Chief Minister Banerjee claimed that “The Kashmir Files” was produced to degrade a particular group of people while “The Kerala Story” was a misrepresented film intended to malign the southern state. Three women who are trafficked to ISIS camps after marrying Muslims are the subjects of “The Kerala Story,” which details their ordeal. Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani play the lead characters in the film. The movie’s trailer, which implied that 32,000 women from Kerala had vanished and joined ISIS, ignited a huge uproar around it. The controversial character from the trailer was later taken out in response to complaints, though. Later, the description of the trailer read, “A story of three women from Kerala.”
