Thunivu & Varisu opening day collection: Cinema halls in Tamil Nadu turned into carnival venues on Wednesday as two films of the biggest crowd pullers of Kollywood – Ajith Kumar & Thalapathy Vijay – hit screens. It was celebration time right from the mid-night with fans waiting to see their superstars in Thunivu and Varisu. While Thunivu had its first show at 1 am, Varisu had it’s premiere at 4.30 am. And as expected, both films scored a bumper start at the box office in Tamil Nadu.

Houseful shows recorded
The two films clocked an occupancy in the range of 85 to 90 percent throughout the opening day. Both films recorded houseful shows across the state in advance. Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu showed a marginal lead over Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu. Thunivu producers, Boney Kapoor, Zee Studios and Red Giant Films ensured premium screens for the film across the state.
The combined collection for the two films in Tamil Nadu was around Rs 35 to 40 crore. The Pongal festival ensured that both films had a bumper opening. As the festive season actually begins from Friday, both films are in for a longer leg at the box office.
Varisu has marginal lead outside Tamil Nadu
Outside Tamil Nadu too, both Thunivu and Varisu did well at the box office. But Varisu got a marginal lead over Thunivu outside Tamil Nadu. Varisu was expected to collect around 9.00 crore outside the state while Thunivu was looking at around Rs 8.50 crore.
The All India gross collection for the films was estimated at around Rs 27 crore taking the combined full day total to approximately Rs 54 crore.
Thunivu has emerged as one of the biggest openers for Ajith Kumar outside Tamil Nadu. Overseas too, Thunivu opened much above AK’s other films.
