Understanding Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, is the primary cause of most cervical cancers. It typically progresses slowly, with precancerous changes developing in the cervical cells before advancing into cancer. Abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or discomfort during sexual intercourse can be symptoms of cervical cancer.
Prevention and Treatment of Cervical Cancer
Vaccination against HPV, regular Pap smear screenings, and early detection and treatment of precancerous lesions are crucial for preventing cervical cancer. Treatment options depend on the stage and severity of the disease. It often involves a combination of therapies, such as surgery to remove cancerous tissue (hysterectomy or cone biopsy), radiation therapy, and chemotherapy to target cancer cells. Minimally invasive procedures like LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure) or cryotherapy may be effective for early-stage cancers. Advanced cases might require more aggressive treatments combining radiation with chemotherapy. Additionally, targeted therapy drugs can be used to block specific pathways involved in cancer cell growth.
