When Lata Mangeshkar Refused To Take Filmfare Award

Filmfare Awards is one of the biggest awards of Bollywood. Which is the desire of almost every B-Town celebrities to get it. But Lata Mangeshkar refused to take this award and that too when she was in the early stages of her career. In 1958, Bimal Roy’s film Madhumati was nominated for the Filmfare Award in 9 categories.

In which the name of Lata Mangeshkar was included for Best Play Back Female Singing. Lata’s name was nominated for Madhumati’s song ‘Aaja Re Pardesi’. The song sung by her in this film was highly appreciated and it was a big deal that Lata was going to get the Filmfare Award for the first time but Lata Mangeshkar refused to take the ‘Filmfare’ trophy, the reason was very strange.

Lata Mangeshkar refused to accept this trophy because she objected to having the trophy (which was in the shape of a woman) without clothes. She did not like this concept of the organizers at all and she refused to accept this award.

Many people were surprised by Lata’s decision, but later Filmfare people gave her this trophy by covering her with a cloth. This matter was in the headlines for a long time. Lata Mangeshkar has won 4 Filmfare Awards.

Lata Mangeshkar sang more than 30 thousand songs in more than twenty languages. In 1991, the Guinness Book of World Records stated that Lata is the singer to record the most number of songs in the world. Whereas Lata Mangeshkar had to struggle a lot in the initial years. Many filmmakers and music directors refused to give her a chance to sing saying that her voice was thin. In ‘Dil Mera Toda, Kahin Ka Na Chhoda’ song, which was greatly appreciated. Lata Mangeshkar had called Ghulam Haider as her ‘godfather’ in an interview.
