Vivek Agnihotri

Vivek Agnihotri: Bollywood director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, who shot to international fame with The Kashmir Files, is renowned for maintaining a public profile through controversy. He gained attention recently after turning down a request to participate in a debate on the Kashmir dispute. He opened up about his decision to decline the offer , which piqued the interest of many. Let us examine the entire tale.

Agnihotri Received Multiple Invitations

While talking with ANU, Agnihotri explained, “They invited me and I received many follow-up calls and emails while I was thinking whether I should attend the event or not. I knew this debate would be meaningless if I didn’t attend it… Pakistanis were also invited to the debate. The issue is that when Pakistan does not have any stake in Kashmir, then why should anyone listen to their point of view… Even though we have become independent, the colonisers still think we do not deserve this independence. This is why they create narratives all the time to disturb India.”

Why Agnihotri Refused to Attend

Agnihotri further added, “Oxford Union debates are like an Oscar for filmmakers and authors. There is nothing more prestigious. This does not mean you surrender to untruth… It is similar to me sitting in BHU or JNU and saying that Wales should be an independent state. I found it very offensive… I could sense a conspiracy and a strategy behind it that is why I declined. In 2022, Oxford Union invited me to an event which got cancelled a few hours before I reached there. The reason was that a few Pakistani boys protested against it… I am not afraid to debate against anyone but I am against this sinister politics of degrading the image of India.”

Invitation to Debate Kashmir’s Freedom

Agnihotri revealed that the Oxford Union had sent him an invitation to participate in a debate on Kashmir’s freedom, which the filmmaker declined. This decision has sparked a lot of discussion on social media. Agnihotri had previously been embroiled in controversies related to his film The Kashmir Files, and now his refusal to debate has made headlines again.

Despite being a prestigious platform, Agnihotri refused the invitation due to his belief that there was a hidden agenda behind the debate, which he found offensive. His stance against engaging in a discussion that included Pakistan, a country he feels has no stake in Kashmir, highlights his views on the politics surrounding the region.
