World Cancer Day: Irrfan Khan to Chadwick Boseman; 5 celebrities who battled the disease

Every year on February 4th, World Cancer Day is commemorated to raise awareness of cancer, the world’s second biggest cause of death. Cancer kills 10 million individuals worldwide each year. According to experts, routine screenings, early identification and treatment can save at least one-third of cancer-related fatalities. The theme for World Cancer Day 2023 is “bridge the care gap,” a demand for fair access to cancer care. Public people have supported the cause by coming out about their treatment journeys and establishing charity foundations over the years. Here are five celebrities that have battled cancer:

Yuvraj Singh

World Cancer Day

Cricketer Yuvraj Singh was tested with lung cancer immediately after India’s World Cup victory in 2011. It was discovered early, and Singh travelled to the United States for treatment. Singh told his supporters that he was only able to defeat the cancer totally only after accepting it as a disease. “When life brings you down, you have choices: but you only need to get back up.” Following his recovery, Singh started the YouWeCan cancer-control charity.

Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan battled neuroendocrine cancer, a very rare type of cancer, for two years before passing away in April 2020. The well-known actor of films like Piku, Haider, and The Life of Pi had reminded his fans about his cancer battle that “the unexpected makes us develop, which is what the previous few days have been about. Learning that I had Neuroendocrine Tumour has been painful, but the love and strength of those around me, as well as the strength I found within myself, has brought me to a place of hope.”

Rishi Kapoor

Rishi Kapoor, a veteran actor, died on April 30, 2020, after a long battle with leukaemia. He was diagnosed with the condition in 2018 and had treatment in the United States for nearly a year.

Chadwick Boseman

On August 28, 2020, the 43-year-old Black Panther actor died of cancer at his Los Angeles home. Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2017 but never disclosed the news. His film Black Panther was a watershed moment, as it was the first big superhero picture to feature an African protagonist.

Manisha Koirala

Manisha Koirala, an actor, battled ovarian cancer for years after being diagnosed in 2012. Throughout her treatment, she sent out encouraging letters to others fighting the disease. “I want to wish a lot of love and success to every single person who is going through this tough journey of cancer treatment,” Koirala added.
