Zee Studios seeks Rs 6 crore refund after box office failure of Kangana Ranaut’s Thalaivii

Thalaivii: Kangana Ranaut’s 2021 release Thalaivii was a much anticipated film. Based on the life of the actor-politician J. Jayalalithaa, Kangana garnered critical acclaim for her acting in the film. She played the shrewd former chief minister of Tamil Nadu. However, the film couldn’t do well at the box office. Now, there are reports that official worldwide distributor Zee Studios is seeking a refund from the makers.

L Vijay’s directorial premiered on the big screens during the Pandemic on September 10, 2021. As cinema halls had not fully reopened due to Covid-19 restrictions, the makers also released it digitally. Netflix released Thalaivii within two weeks of its theatre release.

Multiplexes boycotted Thalaivii

Upset with this, multiplexes decided to boycott the film. As According to reports, Thalaivii started with Rs. 32 lakhs but ended at less than Rs. 2 crores total. Its overseas collection also were very poor. Thalaivii earned only 5.75 crores from its Tamil and Telugu versions.

Now, as per a report, Kangana Ranaut starrer Thalaivii’s worldwide distributor Zee Studios is asking for a refund and has approached Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) to file a complaint over non-payment of the reimbursement.

Zee Studios seeks refund

Zee Studios had released Thalaivii in Hindi and Tamil versions in India and was also responsible for the overseas release. After the film tanked at the box office, they asked the producers Vibri Motion Pictures to refund Rs 6 crores as against their advance payment.

After Vibri Motion Pictures didn’t respond to Zee Studios letter, they filed a complaint with IMPPA. Zee Studios is also trying to move court to get their money back.
