Zwigato movie review: Kapil Sharma, Shahana Goswami show a powerful mirror to today’s India with humour, honesty

Zwigato movie review: The story of Zwigato starring Kapil Sharma and Shahana Goswami is set in Bhubaneswar. It is the story of Manas (Kapil), who became jobless for eight-months because of pandemic-induced unemployment.

But it also is the story of an India so far untouched by Hindi cinema as well as from the national discourse by the all-powerful TV media.

Haves and have-nots

Directed by Nandita Das, Zwigato is a powerful mirror to today’s India, which struggles with disparities between the haves and have-nots. The gap has always been there and if anything, it only widened during the pandemic. When Manas complains about the his miserable job, he is reminded that over ‘five crore Indians are unemployed today’. He must swallow the bitter pill otherwise quit, as millions are lining up for his job.

Nandita has chosen one of the most relatable subjects and as she weaves a compelling story around it. Initially you may find Zwigato going at a slow pace. But soon you start soaking in the flavour of the story without making it overtly commercial.

Dealing with the adversities of life

Comedian Kapil Sharma fits into the role of a delivery boy Manas, who is dealing with the adversities of life and struggling to make ends meet for his family. There are humorous moments too but that is comedy in tragedy. And Nandita Das does it best.

Manas is an ex-factory floor manager who is rendered jobless during pandemic. He is the on;y earnig member in his family–  wife Pratime (Shahana Goswami), children Kartik (Prajwal Sahoo) and Purbi (Yuvika Brahma) and an ailing mother (Shantilata Padhy). To make ends meet he takes up the job of a food delivery boy for a food delivery app called Zwigato – a cheeky blend of popular food delivery apps Zomato and Swiggy). How he picks up the ropes, cracks the complicated rating system, tries to meet daily targets, the difficult customers is what you witness in Zwigato.

Kapil’s relatable character

Kapil Sharma as Manas is endearing with his body language and  demeanour. You will relate to his character who doesn’t want his wife to work, and yet is open to learning the value of pragmatism. Shahana Goswami as his wife Pratima is brilliant with her craft and gives her best to every scene as she manages the balancing act between being supportive and pro-active.

Nandita has co-written the film with Samir Patil.
