Significantly, the Supreme Court has taken a dig at the Center and the Delhi government for the deteriorating air quality in Delhi and its surrounding areas.
Recently, in the Supreme Court, the Central Government had told that only 10 per cent of the smoke from stubble burning contributes to serious pollution in the capital. Burning of farm waste contributes 10 per cent to Delhi’s air pollution, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that industry and road dust play a major role in air pollution.
On this, Justice Surya Kant asked the Center, “Do you agree in principle that stubble burning is not a major reason and this “outrage” was without scientific and legal basis.” When the Centre’s counsel accepted this, the judge said “the Delhi government’s affidavit has no meaning” as they are “blaming only the farmers”.
