According to a top health expert quoted by Bloomberg, China is preparing for a sizable surge of coronavirus cases. The country is expected to report almost 65 million infections every week as the latest wave of the pandemic peaks near the end of June.
Since April, Covid cases in China have increased sharply, driven by the Omicron version XBB. According to local media reports, which cited a presentation by respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan at a biotech conference in the southern city of Guangzhou, the country is likely to report 40 million infections in a week by the end of this month, before peaking at 65 million weekly by the end of June.
The latest infection outbreak may be the biggest since China abandoned its zero-Covid policy in December 2022.
China certainly reported 37 million coronavirus cases in a single day during the prior wave, making it the biggest single-day surge ever. People in China were rushing to stock up on supplies because of the big uptick in diseases. The nation’s healthcare system also under considerable strain as a result of the nation-wide lack of medicines and the overcrowding of hospitals with patients.
Omicron’s BA.2.75 and BJ.1 sub-variants are combined to create XBB. The XBB variety is thought to have a “growth advantage” over BA.2.75 and immunological evasion characteristics.
On the spike protein, XBB has seven mutations. It takes some time for the immune system to detect XBB. It can more easily access human cells in the body to spread illness and deceives immune cells.
