India registered a record 80,092 fresh coronavirus cases on Sunday becoming the first country in the world to surpass the 80,000 mark in single day as the outbreak continued to outgrow.
The last week of August has turned out to be the worst as both the cases growth rate as well as the casualties rate have almost doubled than the earlier weeks.
After Sunday’s surge, the seven-day average of the country has also made a global record with 73,318 cases which is more than the United States.
In Delhi, after almost two months, new covid-cases reached the 2,000 mark on Sunday. The Covid-19 positivity rate has also risen in the state with 8.7 per cent of all tests conducted in the last week turning out to be positive.
On Sunday, Delhi recorded 2,024 new cases, the highest single day after 50 days, taking the total count to 173,390.
Maharashtra, which is by far the worst hit state by the pandemic in the country, recorded its second-highest surge with 16,408 new infections. The state registered 396 fresh death, taking the total toll to 24,399.
With 970 fresh fatalities on Sunday, India’s total now stands at 64,550, as per TOI.
While the total tally crossed 3.5 million mark on Sunday and currently stands at 36,16,730, number of recovered patients has reached 27,67,412. The number of active cases in the country in 7,84,768.
In other news related to covid-19, India’s first female cardiologist, Dr SI Padmavati, succumbed to covid-19 on Saturday night. She was 103. She was admitted to National Heart Institute 11 days ago after contracting the infection.
Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has assured that the country’s covid-19 situation will be “under control” by Diwali this year.
“The Covid-19 will significantly come under control by the Deepavali this year. The leaders and common people effectively worked together to fight the pandemic,” he said.
He further said that the country has tremendously progressed in its fight against the coronavirus as there is no scarcity of PPE kits, ventilators and N 95 masks now.
“The scarcity of PPE kits, ventilators, and N 95 masks is no more now. Every day, five lakh PPE kits are produced in the country while 10 manufacturers are producing N95 masks. 25 producers are manufacturing ventilators,” he added.
The Health Minister also mentioned that the vaccine trials are in full swing and an effective vaccine would be ready by the end of this year.
