Covid-19 update: India reports 11,039 corona cases, 110 deaths

Continuing its streak of low numbers of single-day covid-19 cases, India has logged in 11,039 new infections in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tally to 1,07,77,284, health officials said on Wednesday.

For the last five days, the country has recorded less than 15,000 new infections daily. Also, the daily COVID-19 death toll has been below the 300-mark for more than a month.

On February 2nd, India recorded its lowest daily in eight months as it reported just over 8k cases in one day. At 94, the country’s death was also the lowest in nine months.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that there were 110 more COVID-19 fatalities, taking the overall death toll to 1,54,596.

As per the Ministry’s data, there are 1,60,057 active cases at present whereas 1,04,62,631 persons have been discharged so far.

The recovery rate has increased to 97.08 per cent, while the fatality rate is down to 1.43 per cent.

As many as 41,38,918 corona vaccine doses have been administered in India since the drive began on January 16 after approval for ‘Covishield’ and ‘Covaxin’.

As per the Health Ministry, India is in fifth position globally in terms of the vaccine doses administered in the country, despite the fact that many countries had launched their vaccination campaigns before India.

*The Chinese mainland on Tuesday reported 25 new confirmed Covid-19 cases, including 15 locally transmitted, the National Health Commission said on Wednesday.

*Beijing reported no new locally transmitted confirmed, suspected, or asymptomatic cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, the municipal health commission said Wednesday.

*Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga extended the state of emergency over the Covid-19 pandemic in struggling regions for one month to March 7.

*Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada’s National Research Council-owned Royalmount facility will produce millions of Covid-19 vaccine shots developed by Maryland-based Novavax.

*Ocugen Inc and Bharat Biotech on Tuesday announced they have entered into a definitive agreement to co-develop, supply and commercialise Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, an advanced stage whole-virion inactivated Covid-19 vaccine candidate, for the United States market.

Meanwhile, the total number of global coronavirus cases has topped 103.8 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.25 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
