India logs in 45,892 new Covid cases in 24 hours

New Delhi: India has recorded 45,892 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, slightly higher than yesterday’s figures. With the addition of new infections, the cumulative caseload in the country has reached 3,07,09,557. In the same time, the country reported 817 deaths, taking the cumulative death toll to  4,05,028. The mild surge comes amid “Variants of Concern” being reported in several states.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state, on Wednesday reported 9,558 new COVID-19 cases, taking the state’s tally to over 61.22 lakh. After Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have reported high number of cases. 

The country has 4,60,704 active cases presently. According to the Union Health Ministry, a total of 44,291 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the total discharge to 2,98,43,825 till date.

A total of 36,48,47,549 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 33,81,671 who were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry said. 

As many as 42,52,25,897 samples have been tested up to July 7 for Covid-19. Of these 18,93,800 samples were tested on Wednesday, the Indian Council of Medical Research said. 

On July 6, India recorded 553 deaths — lowest since April 6. This was after on May 23, India saw record fatalities with 4,454 deaths in 24 hours at the peak of the second wave. The first death in the country due to the pandemic was reported last March.

In yet another Covid from milestone, the global death toll crossed 4 million mark. This comes at a time when the virus is mutating and vaccines are feared to not work against the new  variants.
