World Asthma Day 2023: Know what causes the lung disease and its symptoms

World Asthma Day 2023:  Observed on the first Tuesday of May, World Asthma Day falls on May 2. Global Initiative for Asthma, (GINA), a World Health Organization collaborative organization founded in 1993, organizes the day every year to raise awareness worldwide.

The majority of the burden of asthma morbidity and mortality occurs in low and middle-income countries. All resource countries are encouraged to develop and implement asthma management programs through the Asthma Care for All message.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that affects millions of people worldwide and can have a significant impact on quality of life. WAD aims to educate people how to control this respiratory problem and other allergic diseases.

Must be addressed on time

Asthma can cause higher mortality and morbidity rates if not addressed at the right time hence. Those who are prone to asthma must go for regular health check-ups without fail to enhance their quality of life.

Asthma is a lung disease which can afflict all age groups. The airways get narrow and swollen and are blocked owing to excess mucus. This condition affects millions of people and can become fatal if one doesn’t seek timely intervention.

What causes asthma?

Pollen, dust, molds, pet dander, perfume, fumes, chemicals, air pollution, respiratory infections, second hand smoke, family history, certain medications, stress, exercise and cockroaches and even mice are common allergens, say experts.

Symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and fatigue. If any of the symptoms appear, one must contact the doctor without any delay and take the necessary treatment. Timely intervention is key to managing asthma. Not paying attention to it can land you in serious trouble.

Asthma patients must go for regular health check-ups.
