Who is Jagdish Vasudev?
Jagdish Vasudev aka Jaggi was born in Mysore (Mysore State, now Karnataka) on September 3, 1957, into a Telugu family. His father was Biwi Vasudev, and his mother was Sushila Vasudev. His father worked as an optometrist at Mysuru Railway Hospital, while his mother was a homemaker. Jaggi was the youngest of his parents’ five children. Jaggi studied literature in English and began his professional career.
Jagdish married Vijikumari in 1984, and in 1990, she gave birth to a daughter named Radhe. Vijikumari passed away on January 23, 1997. Radhey, Jagadish’s daughter, studied Bharatnatyam at the Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai and married Indian classical vocalist Sandeep Narayan in 2014.

Jaggi used to go to the woodlands for a few days when he was younger. He loved nature and had numerous snakes in his bag when he returned home from the forest. He was an excellent at catching snakes. In the trees, Jaggi would go into deep meditation. He began practising yoga when he was 11 years old, thanks to yoga teacher Raghavendra Rao. Malladihalli Swami is Raghavendra Rao’s moniker.
When did he start down the spiritual path?
Vasudev’s childhood was average, but at the age of 25, he had his first spiritual encounter. This experience encouraged him to pursue spirituality, and he left his business to travel in search of information regarding spiritual encounters. During this time, he decided to start teaching yoga to others.
He started the Isha Foundation in 1992. He founded the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, amid the Velliangiri Mountains, in 1994. While sharing his spiritual vision with others, he came to be known as Sadhguru. He got the Indira Gandhi Environment Award in 2008, and the Padma Vibhushan for spirituality in 2017.
