Health Tips: On the internet, there are several claims about what a person should and should not do for their health. Moreover, new hacks and tricks go trending on social media and get busted just as quickly. However, one of the age-old claims is whether one should be drinking water right after or during a meal or not. Although most people advise against it and refrain from doing so, find out if it is bad for you.

Is drinking water right after your meal bad?

One of the biggest concerns of drinking water during or after a meal is that it could affect the digestive process of our body. As our body breaks down the food in the required time, water can change the composition of the food and alter the breaking down process, leading to digestion problems. According to Dr. Michael F. Picco, this claim is nothing but a myth. Moreover, he reassures that water does not affect the digestive process and in turn, is good for digestion. Here are a few benefits of drinking water during or after a meal

Calorie count

Drinking water while eating can reduce the calorie count of the food. As one pauses to take a sip of water, the individual can better analyse whether he is full or not. This in turn helps regulate portion size.

Helps the body absorb nutrients

Drinking water after a meal changes the composition of the food in the body slightly. This change in thickness helps the nutrients in the food get absorbed better in the body.

Improves digestion

Not only is water safe to drink during or after meals, it speeds up the digestive process. It stimulates a smooth flow of the food through the oesophagus. Moreover, water intake with food helps the essential enzymes in the stomach to function properly. This improves the digestion process in the body

Therefore, there is no issue with drinking water during or after a meal and is completely safe. However, if you face issues after drinking water while eating, it is best to consult a doctor
