Health Tips: A diabetic patient should have a healthy eating plan that is consumed in moderation. Moreover, a proper mealtime should be maintained to regulate the blood sugar levels. Although it is important to consider talking to a medical professional to receive a prescribed diet plan, here are a few diet tips to keep in mind for people living with diabetes.
Avoid extra calories and carbohydrates
Extra calories and carbohydrates lead to a blood sugar level rise. If not controlled, it may spiral out to cause a serious issue called, hyperglycemia. If not treated at the right time, this can cause damage to the kidney or heart.
Regular Mealtimes
For most diabetes patients, eating meals on time is also just as important as eating right. Insulin is created by the body or the medications taken by the diabetes patient. Therefore, to maintain the insulin levels and make the most of it, mealtime should be monitored.
Healthy Carbohydrates
Healthy carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and low-fat dairy items contain natural sugar levels that are usually safe to consume during diabetes. One should avoid added sugars in food or drinks, which could increase several issues.
Fibre Rich foods
Foods that are rich in fibre are generally good for diabetic patients. This is because the fibre makes it difficult for the body to break down the food and absorb it. This prevents spikes in the blood sugar levels in the body. Fibre-rich foods include fruits vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Raw food is usually richer in fibre as compared to cooked food.
Good Fats
Foods containing good fats can help lower cholesterol levels. This in turn regulates the blood sugar levels. However, even these fats are high in calories. Therefore, they must be consumed in moderation. Healthy fats include avocados, nuts and olive oil. Along with this, eating fish like salmon once or twice a week can also be beneficial as they are rich in Omega-Fatty acids
