AIIMS Doctor Priyanka Sehrawat talked about this disease and she gave some prevention tips as well to encourage people towards this disease and save their life. Let’s know about this life-harming disease and the prevention that you can take to keep yourself safe.
What is a Brain-Eating Amoeba?
According to the AIIMS Nueorologist, Brain-eating amoeba is a rare brain infection that unfortunately has no treatment. This organism is an amoeba, neither a bacteria nor a virus. We all know amoebas are one-celled organisms.
This organism thrives in warm freshwater lakes and ponds. When it infects our brain, it leads to brain abscess formation. Abscesses lead to loss of sensorium, comatose, hallucinations, behavioural changes, and imbalance. Lots of neurological symptoms can be there but ultimately it progresses to a comatose state where there is no treatment possible and there is no coming back.
Prevention
Doctor Priyanka Sehrawat talked about the prevention for safety from the disease. She further said because it is thriving in warm freshwater lakes, let’s avoid activities in warm freshwater lakes and ponds or tourist-guided things or activities in summer because it thrives a lot in summer. Secondly, whenever you are diving in pools or lakes, either use a nose clip or hold your nose with your fingers and then you dive in.
