Good food: Suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD)? Caused by change in season, this type of depression may sound a minor ailment but can be crippling. Typically, symptoms worsen when the winter is at its peak. You feel hopeless, lack concentration, suffer from social withdrawal and fatigue. The good thing is you can cure SAD with the right type of food. Food makes us feel good. It tastes great and nourishes the body but also impacts our mood.
Researchers say that certain foods affect powerful mood-modifying brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are made from the foods we eat and are present in higher concentrations after meals than between them.
So what are the right kinds of foods and beverages to keep us in the best of our health in winter? One that supports our healthy immune system through the winter months.
Take a look at the good food and be sure to include them in your meals and snacks:
Low-fat or non-fat yogurt
Yogurt contains live bacteria cultures that keeps the gut healthy in winter. Both plain and flavored curd in varying consistencies is good for the gut. Use yogurt as a dip for fruits and vegetables or eat it plain. Yogurt provides protein, calcium, and vitamin D.
Nuts
Powerhouse of energy and nutrients, nuts are full of protein and are healthy for the heart. Can be had anytime in the main dish or as snack. They are good antioxidants. Sprinkle them on the cereal or salad or have just a mouthful.
Fruits and vegetables
Kiwifruit, oranges, broccoli, potatoes, peppers, and berries are good source of vitamin C, fiber, vitamin A, and a host of other antioxidants. Fruits and vegetables are an essential part of the winter mix. More colourful the fruit or the vegetable, better it is for your health. Have them everyday and be sure to include a variety of colors.
Dark green leafy vegetables
Instrumental in decreasing symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), collard greens, turnip greens, spinach and mustard greens are seasonally available.
Fatty fish
You can cure depression with fish high in in B12 and omega-3 fatty acids. Choices include mackerel, anchovies, sardines, salmon and tuna.
Dark chocolate
Chocolate with at least 70% cocoa solids release endorphins that improve mood.
