Desi summer drinks: Body undergoes a seasonal shift as the mercury rises. With summer, our digestive system slows down and weakens. It is important that we opt for lighter meals. Heavy meals cause lethargy and fatigue, more so in summer.
Thankfully, we have seasonal fruits such as muskmelon, watermelon, bael, grapes, mangoes, jackfruits, rose apples and sugarcane. They are rich in water content and infused with minerals, vitamins and nutrients to keep body hydrated.
Here we bring you a few desi summer drinks that will keep you cool and boost your energy level during those hot months.
Aam panna
Beat the heat with a refreshing glass of Aam panna. This desi drink is made of raw mango pulp blended with cumin, jeera and mint leaves.
Ingredients
500 gm green mangoes
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp salt
2 tsp kala namak (black rock salt)
2 tsp roasted and powdered cumin seeds
2 Tbsp finely chopped mint leaves
2 cups water
Method
Boil the mangoes till they become soft inside, and the skin gets dis colored
When cool enough to handle, remove the skin and squeeze the pulp out of the mangoes
Mix all the ingredients together, blend and add 2 cups of water.
Put some ice in the glasses and pour the panna over it.
Sattu Sharbat
Nothing can be better than Sattu sharbat when the mercury is going up and so is humidity. Made with sattu flour, sugar and water, it’s not only refreshing but also filling.
Ingredients
Chilled water – 4 cups
Lemon juice – 2 teaspoons
Roasted Cumin powder – Half teaspoon
Mint leaves – 2 teaspoons (chopped)
Black salt to taste
Green chilli – 1 (chopped)
Raw Mango – 2 teaspoons (grated)
Method
Add all ingredients in a jug and mix well.
Serve in glasses along with some ice cubes.
Garnish with more mint leaves.
Lassi
Ever tried Punjabi lassi? This smooth and creamy yogurt based refreshment is considered to be an amazing summer cooler. Give it a twist by adding mint, avocado, mango, banana, walnut or any fruit of your choice and stay cool.
Ingredients
750 gms yogurt
50 gms ice cubes
Salt or sugar
200 ml water
Method
Crush the ice cubes in a blender.
Add the yoghurt, water, salt or sugar.
Blend for about 1 minute and serve chilled.
Add any fruit before blending.
Watermelon juice
One of the best summer fruits is watermelon and its juice is even better. It is super refreshing and its hydrating properties help keep your body hydrated and fresh.
Deseed watermelon. Add chaat masala, a dash of lemon
Blend in a mixie
Top up with mint leaves and serve chilled
