Isha Foundation, which is led by Sadhguru, held an event called Mega Jackfruit Festival under the Cauvery Calling Movement which saw the participation of over 2,000 farmers. The event held on May 28 welcomed farmers from all over the country, each of them aiming to make a change.
Over 100 varieties of jackfruit
Thiru Haridas, former Deputy of Agriculture, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, orgnaised the festival which boasts over 100 varieties of jackfruit. “Jackfruit should be cultivated as much as possible due to the various benefits, including- food and nutrition, economy, and livelihood it offers. I am growing 100 to 150 varieties and because of its uniqueness our jackfruit has earned a Geographical Indications (GI) tag on its own,” he added.
Dr Jaganmohan said, “Usually we use only 35% of the jackfruit from its fruit and the seeds. When we explored how to make use of the remaining 65 percent, we learned that eating jackfruit at the right degree of ripeness can cure cancer, diabetes, thyroid, and various other ailments. Powdered jackfruit added to wheat flour can cure diabetes.
When Leonardo DiCaprio extended support to Sadhguru
Leonardo DiCaprio called for support to Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation and its mission to preserve the Cauvery river.
“India’s rivers are severely endangered with many of its smaller rivers vanishing. Join Sadhguru and the Isha Foundation in their fight to preserve the Cauvery river,” the Hollywood actor said on a Facebook page recently. Last year, Sadhguru was also invited by DiCaprio’s foundation for their Earth Sense event.
What is Cauvery Calling?
In Sadhguru’s words, “Cauvery has been the source of wellbeing, prosperity and the very source of life for these lands. A forest-fed perennial river is fast becoming a seasonal stream as 87% of tree cover has been removed in 50 years. Cauvery is calling, do you have a heart to hear?”
