Sadhguru Tips: Physical desires and urges are natural aspects of being human. From reproduction to attraction, these biological aspects are integral to our existence. However, as Sadhguru points out, our modern society has often complicated our understanding of our biology, making it a source of discomfort or even shame. In this article, we explore Jaggi Vasudev’s perspective on physical desires and urges, and how we can address them in a healthy, balanced manner.
Coming to Terms with Our Biology
Sadhguru highlights that human existence is driven by the very biological urges we often try to suppress or misunderstand. He explains that if no one felt attraction or desire, none of us would be here today. These natural urges are not inherently wrong; they are simply a part of the biological process.
Unfortunately, many societies have failed to come to terms with these biological facts. As a result, our body parts and physical urges often dominate our thoughts and actions, leading to confusion or unnecessary shame. Sadhguru suggests that we need to recognise and accept our biology for what it is. Instead of elevating or degrading our physical urges, we should view them with clarity and understanding.
The Mind-Body Disconnect
A common issue, as per Sadhguru, is the disconnect between the mind and the body. Our thoughts and perceptions about our biology are often influenced by religious and cultural teachings, which have historically labeled certain aspects of our biology—especially around sexuality and gender—as sinful or shameful. This resistance to accepting our natural biological differences has made these issues disproportionately large in our minds.
Jaggi Vasudev highlights that this distortion causes unnecessary tension. For example, the natural physical differences between men and women, although biologically insignificant, have been blown out of proportion due to societal influences. The more we resist or overthink these differences, the more they dominate our minds.
Understanding and Managing Sexual Urges
Sadhguru acknowledges that as teenagers, our hormonal changes can often overwhelm our rational thinking, turning a small change in someone’s appearance into an obsession. However, he emphasizes that by adulthood, it’s crucial to regain control over our minds. One must learn to view the human body in a neutral, non-objectifying way, without attaching meaning or judgment to it.
Sadhguru advises that instead of repressing these urges, we should understand them as part of our biology. A healthy attitude towards sexuality and physical desires means not letting them dominate our thoughts or actions. By finding balance, we can avoid allowing our biology to dictate our mental and emotional state.
