Sadhguru unlocks secrets to be happy: ‘You are inherently joyful if…’

Sadhguru Tips

Sadhguru tips: Sadhguru, a yogi and environmentalist, is unquestionably one of the most significant figures of our time. He founded the well-known non-profit spiritual organisation Isha Foundation and is the face of the Save Soil movement, an effort to solve the condition of the world’s soil. When Sadhguru is not travelling, he is asking people queries about all things related to life. In an exclusive interview with a leading daily, Sadhguru recently answered several questions ranging from blessings to misery.

Q. I’ve witnessed yogis and saints bestowing blessings on people. What exactly is a blessing?

“All the best to you” is not a benediction; rather, it is only a wish or an aspiration. There is nothing to support it. It’s just a pleasant idea. A blessing is not a feeling or an idea. It consists of energy. You can take a little of it and offer if you have made yourself flexible enough—so that you are not a burnt pot—or if you are merely loose energy. You cannot extract anything from a properly burned pot since the contents have crystallised. What speeds you along is a blessing. It is comparable to vehicle fuel. It is a long trip home if you have to push your automobile. However, if you prefer having your automobile parked, a moving vehicle is risky. Many people have made the decision to live in parked cars. Afternoon turns into afternoon, which turns into evening, which turns into night. Winter follows fall, followed by spring, summer and finally autumn once more. Due to the drastic change in environment, it appears as though you are travelling. You could live there quite comfortably. Simply put, you remain still. However, if you’re a little crazy and are willing to take a chance and travel a certain distance, you can drive a car. You need fuel if you want to travel. That’s what a blessing is, after all.

Q. You were explaining to us how disasters may either leave one damaged or make them wiser. Can you explain how experiencing melancholy can help us grow?

Sadhguru: The majority of people are unaware of what it means for suffering to manifest as physical suffering. However, for other individuals, when tragedy truly hits, everything they had ever cherished in their lives is stripped away, and a profound melancholy sets in. Many approaches exist for dealing with this grief. Some people only isolate themselves in a corner and drive themselves insane, unhappy for everyone. Others, when depressed, find a way to carry out some worthwhile tasks. People who have experienced harm like this frequently go on to lead excellent lives as karma yogis. Any emotion can be used as a creative force in one’s life. You still have some sense in you when you learn to be more sympathetic, kind, and loving when grief sets in. You are a fool if you become agitated, angry, and depressed when everything around you seems to be wrong. If someone interjects at that time, your melancholy can very easily turn to rage. Will you transform this pain into resentment or into love and compassion? When you are depressed, sympathy comes extremely easily. It’s crucial to learn how to express all of your emotions creatively. Not just being happy is significant. Without experiencing sadness, you cannot mature. Only those who have experienced sadness and pain may be considered mature. Otherwise, neither you nor anybody else in your immediate vicinity can ever really comprehend what is happening to you.

Q. Why aren’t we inherently happy, Sadhguru? Why do we live in such misery?

The issue is that we have veered from life’s natural order in our imaginations. This is why happiness has turned into a goal for individuals since we are so distant from experiencing it. You can’t work your way to happiness. You were born with it, after all. You were happy for no reason when you were young. But whatever happiness this existence had given you has now been lost and ruined. The fundamental core of who you are is joy. You are inherently joyful if you only understand the way life flows organically within you. We have a profound misunderstanding of life and are desperately clinging to other people, ideologies, philosophies, and gods. This is due to the fact that we haven’t tried to look within ourselves for anything truly valuable or substantial. You have been preoccupied with the outside world ever since you emerged from your mother’s womb and opened your eyes. You fail to realise that your current state of well-being depends only on you and not on the environment around you.
