Sawan 2024: The holy month of Sawan has arrived on July 22, 2024, which is considered to be the primary period of worship and dedication for Lord Shiva, also known as Lord Bholenath. The holy month reverberates with great pomp not only in India but everywhere, and Lord Shiva is worshipped during this time in the form of 12 Jyotirlingas. Many religious practices, such as Jalabhishek and darshan-pujan, are performed by devotees aiming to please the deity.
Does Physical Intimacy Affect Purity During Sawan?
Sawan is characterized by the notion of purity of body and mind. The question thus is, as most of the adherents ask: Does having sex in such a pious month damage one’s purity? According to religious beliefs, Sawan is the month when the rate of devotion and prayer lies at a greater extent. Many devotees avoid the physical relationship with their spouses to tune themselves amidst the spiritual sanctity of the period. The underlying idea is that by so doing, they are able to focus more on acts of worship, striving to be pure in their pursuit of divine blessings.
Whether one should abstain from physical relations during Sawan or any other religious observance is ultimately a matter of personal belief and faith. Some devotees stick strictly to the path of celibacy, especially on Mondays. Mondays are considered very pious to worship Lord Shiva. It is said that a fast and Puja of Lord Bholenath on Mondays wipes out all the obstacles in the path of success.
Religious Beliefs and Celibacy
Besides, Sawan is the apt time for couples to get involved in joint worship. Performing rituals together—like offering milk, dub grass, saffron, flowers, and sandalwood to the Shivling—are considered sure ways through which marriage bickering gets resolved and there is an enhancement in conjugal bliss. This act of collective devotion not only strengthens the spiritual bond between husband and wife but also fosters a deeper emotional connection.
Basically, even though the tradition is to be purer than usual in body and mind during the month of Sawan, there is no denying the fact that it is ultimately a matter of choice. Devotees are free to observe and practice what in their personal view may suit their ideology and contribute to their spiritual activities during this month.
