Discover the background, meaning, and purpose of this unique day.
History and Reason of Celebrating Valentine’s Day
Roman King Claudius was not fond of the love-promoting efforts made by Pastor Saint Valentine. The monarch thought that marriage and love undermined men’s authority. It was also mandated by the king that military personnel and public servants not get married.
When Saint Valentine learned of this, he objected to it. He arranged numerous army officers’ and soldiers’ marriages as well. On February 14, 269, the king, enraged by Saint Valentine’s disobedience of his commands, hanged Saint Valentine. Valentine’s Day is observed on February 14 each year in remembrance of Saint Valentine, who was thought to have died as a sacrifice for his love.
