Sadhguru on Shiva’s grief for Sati
Sadhguru recently shared a clip on his Instagram space where he talked about Shiva’s grief for Sati after she mortified herself. “Shiva is known to have grieved when he lost Sati. How can a divine being like Shiva get stuck in moh and become sad?,” a follower asked Sadhguru. Replying to this, Sadhguru explained how Shiva experiences heightened emotions in comparison to us and how it was justified for him to mourn the loss of his dear wife despite being a divine force.
“In an unfortunate incident, his wife is burnt alive. You see someone that you hold dearly is charred to death and you know fire doesn’t kill you sweetly. So, when your dear wife is burnt alive, what do you want him to do? And, if he did not grieve, I would not consider him divine at all,” he said.
“That’s very the way of the inanimate. Even trees grieve in their own way when something bad happens to them. Even animals grieve. Do you think Shiva is less than that? No. His grief is very intense. But he’s not entangled in it. Yes, a short period of grief, and intense grief happened to him and we value him for that because he is not inhuman. He’s a superhuman, if you ask me, so everything is heightened in him,” he said.
About Shiva and Sati
Sati left the luxuries of her father Daksha’s palace and retired to a forest to devote herself to the worship of Shiva. Her loyalty was often put to the test by Shiva and his attendees. But her unwavering love and dedication moved Shiva who consented to marry her. Despite her father’s disapproval, Sati married Shiva and moved to Kailash.
There are many versions of Sati’s protest against her father, but one of the most popular narratives suggests that Daksha organised a Yajna to which all deities, except Sati and Shiva, were invited. Sati, however, still went to her father’s yajna in an attempt to make amends and meet her relatives. Shiva refused as he knew Daksha would humiliate her but she still went on with her wish. Sati was received by her mother and her sisters, but Daksha was furious at her unwanted arrival. He humiliated her and even went on to mock Shiva. To uphold the honor of her husband, Sati self-immolated right there. Deeply disturbed by his wife’s death, Shiva performed the destructive Tandava dance.
Sati was then reborn as Parvati daughter of Himavat, king of the mountains and personification of the Himalayas, and his wife, Mena. She later married Shiva.
