World No Tobacco Day 2023: May 31 is marked as World No Tabacco Day across the world by World Health Organisation (WHO) and other public health institutions. The theme for World No Tabacco Day 2023 is ‘We need food, not tabacco’. Over the last few years, vaping has successfully replaced traditional smoking. While one may believe vaping is healthier than smoking, medical professionals have warned against its use as they believe it can lead to health hazards.
What is Vaping?
Vaping is an act of inhaling and exhaling aerosol products with the help of an E-cigarette or vape. Vaping has been a significant trend over the past decade. Vapes come in a wide range of flavours that have been the main attraction for smokers. Its increasing social acceptability is another route cause of its exponential rise among the masses across the world. The perception that vaping is trendy or cool has been conceptualised by Gen Z, who is also its top contributor.
Another aspect of vaping becoming mainstream is its easy availability. Although, the Indian government banned e-cigarettes in September 2019, in the interest of public health, the use of e-cigarettes hasn’t stopped due to the black market, which is a threat to the country’s efforts to control tobacco.
Is vaping better than smoking?
Vaping has long been promoted as an alternative to smoking as most vapes allow users to control their nicotine intake. While vaping eliminates the combustion process that produces harmful smoke in traditional cigarettes, it comes with its own set of risks.
- Nicotine addiction: Many e-cigarettes contain Nicotine which can lead to addiction. It can further have many harmful effects such as increased heart rate, and elevated blood pressure. Individuals who are engrossed in the regular intake of Nicotine also are at a greater risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Respiratory issues: Since vaping follows a method similar to smoking, it tends to affect your lung. Anecdotal experiences have suggested that there has been an increase in lung injury among regular vapers.
- Impact on brain development: The use of e-cigarettes can affect brain development as it hinders your motor skills. This can also affect overall development.
- Exposure to chemicals: Vaping involves inhaling aerosols that contain various sedatives and harmful chemicals. Some of these chemicals can cause cardiovascular diseases.
So, the bottom line is vaping is no better than smoking. In fact, it contains nicotine with additives and aerosols. If you want to quit vaping, awareness and education on the subject are a must. Yoga and meditation can also help you get rid of nicotine addiction. For more information, individuals can also consult health professionals.
