108 Indian Army women officers to be promoted to full Colonel rank for command role

According to Indian Army sources, the Indian Army is conducting a Special Selection Board for women officers to promote from the rank of Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel in order to place them on par with their male counterparts.

It goes from January 9 through January 22, 2023.

Army officials report that from the 1992 batch to the 2006 batch, a total of 244 women officers are being considered for promotion against 108 vacancies in various Arms and Services (Engineers, Signals, Army Air Defence, Intelligence Corps, Army Service Corps, Army Ordnance Corps & Electrical & Mechanical Engineers).

The government has announced the vacancies for this Special No. 3 Selection Board in order to promote the affected female officers and preserve gender equity in the Indian Army.

Selection Board has invited 60 women officers to serve as observers

To ensure fair conduct and address any concerns they may have, the Selection Board has invited a total of 60 women officers to serve as observers.

The 108 female officers who were found to be FIT following the selection board are being considered for posting on various command postings. According to Indian Army sources, the first batch of these postings will be made by the end of January 2023.

In September 2022, for the first time, five women officers cleared the prestigious Defence Services Staff Course (DSSC) and Defence Services Technical Staff Course (DSTSC) exams. They will be considered for command appointments after they undergo training for a year.

In India, women are still not eligible for pure combat arms such as Infantry, Mechanised Infantry, and Armoured Corps.
