The Comoros-flagged oil tanker “Prestige Falcon” capsized in a catastrophic maritime event off the coast of Oman, leaving the crew of sixteen people unaccounted for. One day after the ship sank, on Tuesday, the event was reported by Oman’s marine security centre.

13 Indian Nationals Among Missing Crew

The crew of the mishapped tanker consisted of sixteen, comprised of three Sri Lankans and thirteen Indians. The Omani maritime security centre posted this information on social media. The centre also told Reuters that the ship is “submerged, inverted,” but it did not clarify whether the ship had stabilised or if any oil had leaked.

Destination: Yemeni Port of Aden

The “Prestige Falcon” capsized close to Duqm, Oman’s main industrial port, when it was sailing to the Yemeni port of Aden, according to shipping statistics from LSEG. The 117-meter-long tanker was built in 2007 and was mostly used to transport oil products on brief coastal excursions.

Search and Rescue Operation Underway

Omani authorities swiftly launched a search-and-rescue operation in coordination with maritime authorities, as reported by Oman’s state news agency. The port of Duqm, located on the southwest coast of Oman, is a hub for the country’s significant oil and gas projects, including a major refinery within Duqm’s expansive industrial zone, Oman’s largest economic venture.
