15-Day ‘Cope India 23’ Air Exercise Culminates, India and US Show Air Power Near China Border

Cope India 23: Cope India 23, a 15-day joint air exercise between the US and India, came to an end on Monday at the Kalaikunda Air base. The bilateral aviation exercise featured some of the greatest aircraft from the two nations.

‘The first exercise of Cope India was conducted at the Gwalior Air Force station in 2004. It was repeated in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2018,’ IAF Group Captain Neeraj Jhamb stated. The exchange of air combat employment philosophies and mutual understanding of force use are the main objectives of the exercise. Aircrew from the Japanese Air Self Defence Force also took part in the exercise as observers. The exercise’s initial stage was held at Panagarh Airbase in West Bengal. It emphasised improving understanding between parties about the tactical application of air power, fostering teamwork during combat operations, and developing knowledge of air operations in a large force package.

India made use of its Rafales and Tejas aircraft for the first time

The US Air Force has deployed its long-range bombers B1B and F-15E for the first time. The combined aviation exercise included 564 personnel from both the Indian aviation Force and the United States Air Force (USAF). While the USAF deployed MC-130 J, B1B bombers,C-17 Globemasters, C-130J and F-15E fighters, India deployed aircraft such the Rafale, Sukhoi-30 MKI, LCA Tejas, Jaguars, C-17 Globemaster, C-130 Super Hercules, and IL-76 AWACS. In Cope India, India also made use of its Rafales and Tejas aircraft for the first time.
