Massive rain poured in the neighbouring states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday and Wednesday, leaving many lives upheaveled.
The rain submerged low-lying areas, trigerring roof and wall collapses. AS many as 80,000 people were evacuated and 30 people died, according to officials.
Seventeen people were killed in Telangana’s capital Hyderabad and its suburbs while 10 people died in Andhra Pradesh.
Nine people, including three children, were killed and four injured in two separate wall collapses in Hyderabad’s Bandlaguda late on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke Telangana Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday and assured them of all possible support and assistance from the Centre in the rescue-and-relief work.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Spoke to @TelanganaCMO KCR Garu and AP CM @ysjagan Garu regarding the situation in Telangana and AP respectively due to heavy rainfall. Assured all possible support and assistance from the Centre in rescue & relief work. My thoughts are with those affected due to the heavy rains.”
The Indian Army has joined the Telangana in their rescue operations and flood relief and are now helping in evacuating stranded people.
“The heavy and incessant rains for the last two days due to depression in Bay of Bengal has resulted in flooding of many residential areas of Hyderabad. Raising to the occasion the Army launched flood relief and rescue columns on 14 October 2020 in Bandlaguda area on requisition by the State Government,” a press statement from the Defence Wing of the Government of India read.
“Many stranded people have been evacuated and showing humanitarian values large number of food packets have been distributed. Army Medical teams accompanying the columns are providing essential first aid and medical relief to the stranded people,” it said.
According to a bulletin from the State Disaster Management Authority, he Singapore township on the outskirts of the city received the maximum of 30.6 cm of rain in a span of 12 hours until 10 pm. The South Hastinapuram area received 28.3 cm of rain until 1 am. Other areas of the city reported rainfall ranging from 11.5 cm to 20.5 cm.
