7 drown in Haryana during Ganesh idols’ immersion ceremony

Seven boys lost their lives on Friday during the immersion ceremony for Ganesh idols in Haryana, said Police. Four people drowned in Mahendragarh, while three deaths were reported from Sonipat.

The visarjan ceremony marked the conclusion of Ganesh Chaturthi, a 10-day event that started on August 31 and lasted until today. Lord Ganesh statues are carried to neighbouring water sources and submerged. In large processions, worshippers immerse the idols.

A man who had gone for idol immersion in Sonipat’s Mimarpur ghat with his son and nephew drowned. According to authorities, a post-mortem has been performed on the bodies, and an investigation is under progress.

Nine people attempted to immerse the Ganesha statue in the canal near the village of Jhagadoli in Mahendragarh but were carried away by the swift passage of water.

Late at night, eight persons were retrieved from the canal. Four of them passed away.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar took to Twitter and said, “The news of the untimely death of many people due to drowning during Ganpati immersion in Mahendragarh and Sonipat districts is heart-wrenching.”

We all stand with families of the dead in this difficult time. The NDRF team has saved many people from drowning. I pray for their speedy recovery,” Khattar tweeted in Hindi.
