A chilling event unfolded in Imphal, Manipur, when insurgents cloaked as army personnel deceived innocent people, leading to three casualties. This calculated act of terror occurred when the offenders beckoned their victims out of their homes, pretending to conduct a routine security sweep, only to launch a lethal attack.
The unfortunate incident transpired in a border village between the Kangpoki and Imphal West districts. Security personnel patrolling the area were able to intervene upon hearing gunfire, but the culprits had already accomplished their brutal task. It is believed the insurgents belong to the Meitei ethnic group.
Swift Response: Security Forces Begin Search Operation Post the Tragedy
Post the tragic event, a joint team comprising of the Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, and the Army conducted a comprehensive search operation. Assam Rifles personnel were able to recover the bodies of the victims, laying bare the reality of the situation.
Background Unrest: Mounting Tensions in Manipur Over Scheduled Tribe (ST) Status
This horrific episode comes on the back of the rising friction in Manipur, following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ on May 3. The march was in protest of the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, a request that has stirred unrest in the region.
Moreover, the state has witnessed several bouts of violence, leading to casualties nearing triple digits and over 300 individuals sustaining injuries. In a bid to keep peace, the state has seen the deployment of about 10,000 Army and Assam Rifles personnel.
Federal Investigation: CBI Launches Probe into Manipur Unrest
Amidst the escalating unrest, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has instituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe six cases linked to the violence. This team is led by a DIG-rank officer and is set to conduct their investigation from the Special Crime Branch in Kolkata.
Home Minister Amit Shah, on his visit to the northeastern state, announced the CBI’s involvement in the investigations, thus underlining the severity of the situation. This shocking episode, while extremely tragic, also draws attention to the significant socio-political issues simmering beneath the surface in Manipur.
