Sanjay Singh: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party was criticised on Wednesday by the Aam Aadmi Party, which said that the release of its MP, Sanjay Singh, on bond, was the “first and biggest loss” of the BJP‘s “political conspiracy”. Gopal Rai, a party leader and minister in Delhi, claimed that although no evidence or money trail was discovered against Singh, he was sent in jail based only on accusations.
Supreme Court Grants Bail
Sanjay Singh was given bail by the Supreme Court on Tuesday in the Delhi excise policy case. Singh was given conditional bail by a court led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, enabling him to engage in political activities. The Enforcement Directorate informed the Supreme Court that it has no issues with the AAP MP being granted bail.
“Supreme Court has granted bail to Sanjay Singh and the ED was speechless before the SC – Sanjay Singh was in jail for 6 months. No evidence or money trail was found. You locked him up for 6 months on the basis of allegations,” Rai said.
Legal Arguments by Abhishek Manu Singhvi
Senior attorney Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who was representing Singh in court, delivered a number of sharp arguments against the ED’s case and claimed that approver Dinesh Arora’s assertions served as the foundation for the enforcement agency’s entire case. He cited the Supreme Court as evidence that, prior to naming Singh, Arora had actually made nine remarks that exonerated him. According to Rai, Arora was “forced” and “threatened” into becoming an approver by the BJP.
“He told you 9 times that he (Sanjay Singh) has no role (in liquor policy case). He was forced to become approver and got a forced confession from him following which he (Sanjay Singh) was jailed,” he said.
Comparison to Chief Minister’s Case
Rai said, “You have jailed the Chief Minister too on the basis of similar allegations. Your agency couldn’t find any evidence for 2 years. Still the BJP is adamant into arresting us and putting us behind bars.” “Sanjay Singh’s bail is the first and biggest loss of BJP’s political conspiracy. These conspiracies will be further exposed,” he added.
Anticipation of Singh’s Release
Singh is expected to leave jail on Wednesday after the court granted him relief, but his wife Anita Singh stated that celebrations won’t begin until other party heavyweights, such as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendra Jain, are also freed.
