ABVP students clash with JNU security staff over fellowship funds

New Delhi: Students from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and members of the security staff at Jawaharlal Nehru University were indulged in a clash on Monday afternoon, after students gathered at the finance office demanding release of fellowships.

Five students went to the scholarship department around 11 a.m., which is the legal time to inquire about student scholarships, according to ABVP JNU President Rohit Kumar, who added that the guards abused and misbehaved with the students. “Such is the condition of this department that just four staff are left now while there used to be 17 earlier. The students have been suffering for over two years now. They aren’t getting non-NET scholarships, MCM (Merit-cum-Means) or even JRF,” he said.

The video shows a group of uniformed security guards pushing and attempting to restrain a group of protesting students inside what appears to be an administrative office. Some videos show blood stains on the floor, bloody dressing in the garbage cans, and shattered glass on the ground.

“Few JNU students were demanding for distribution of scholarship for students which was pending at the end of JNU administration since last 2 years. Students have staged protest at the adminstration office when the Guards of JNU security came and tried to remove protesting students, scuffle broke out between students and guards on duty,” said Manoj C, DCP (South West).

The students who were protesting claimed that officials frequently misbehaved, lied to them, and did not address their complaints even after they were given time. They claim they will not leave the office until the scholarship funds are distributed to the students.
