Air Quality Index: Delhiites breathe and enjoy the cleanest November Air, this year

Air Quality Index: Month of November has been a very special month for Delhiites, as far as this year’s Air Quality Index is concerned. They relished, enjoyed and breathed some of the cleanest November Air in years and it was largely due to early Diwali (celebrated in the month of October), fewer farm fires compared to last year and a lack of Western Disturbances in the second half of the month.

They breathed easy as there were only three ‘severe’ air days in the month of November and the Air Quality Index (AQI) had the reading of 321, which was just a few points behind November 2019’s AQI reading of 312.

Air Quality Index and the Cleanest November Air experienced by citizens of Delhi

It has been a warm November month this year, people in Delhi yet to pull out their warm clothing’s. As per the Data released by Indian Metrological Department (IMD), the average temperature of 28.7 degree Celsius was reported in the month of November, which was 0.5 degrees above normal, and the highest since November 2016. However, the nights were colder with people bringing out their quilts, the temperature dipped below the 10 degree mark in the last 13 consecutive days and recorded an average of 12.3 Celsius, 0.6 degrees below the monthly normal.

Delhi had three days of ‘severe air’ in November

The Average Temperature experienced in Delhi had a contrasting story to tell, and the citizens experienced above normal temperatures which hovered around the 17 degree mark, however on account of lack of Western disturbances in the second half, the mercury did not rise above the 10-degree mark after November 18.

November also marked an advent of three Western disturbances, which were feeble, that led to a change in the direction and an incursion of slight moisture. Delhi also experienced cold, dry and northwesterly winds which made the days warm and nights cold.

Let’s have a sneak preview of Long Period Analysis (LPA) for Delhi from 1981 onwards, which provides us with below information:

• From 1981 onwards the Capitals average minimum temperature in November is 9.9% C and dips below 10 C only in the last four days of the month
• This year , Delhi’s mercury fell below 10 degree Celsius in the last four days of the month
• The maximum temperature is around 27 degree C so far, with the capital recoding a maximum of 27.1 degree C on Tuesday and 26.2 degree C on Wednesday.

Further, this year , Delhi recorded just three ‘severe’ air days and recorded 16 ‘very poor ‘air days and 11 ‘poor days’ , which were indicative of the harmful impact of air quality even for healthy people.
