In a surprising development, the dissenting faction within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has declared Ajit Pawar, not Sharad Pawar, as their national president. Ajit Pawar claims to have garnered support from over 35 MLAs and has laid claim to the party name and symbol.
Overwhelming Majority Votes for Ajit Pawar, Asserts Faction
As per the letter addressed to the Election Commission, Ajit Pawar has reportedly been voted to the presidency of the NCP by a large number of party members. These members, consisting of both legislative and organisational wings of the party, unanimously agreed to Ajit Pawar’s leadership, the document states.
Sharad Pawar’s Faction Initiates Disqualification Process Against Dissenting MLAs
In the wake of these developments, Sharad Pawar’s faction, under Jayant Patil, has commenced a disqualification process for nine MLAs. These legislators recently aligned themselves with the Eknath Shinde-led BJP government in Maharashtra.
Ajit Pawar Accuses Sharad Pawar, Signals the Need for Change
Previously, Ajit Pawar had expressed that Sharad Pawar would maintain his position as the national president of the party. However, his recent actions suggest a clear deviation from this stance. Speaking to party workers, he indicated that it was time for the senior Pawar to step down, highlighting the retirement ages in government service and BJP politics. Ajit Pawar also accused Sharad Pawar of letting go of a chance for the NCP to secure the Chief Minister’s position back in 2004.
The aftermath of this significant shift in the NCP’s political landscape remains to be seen. Will this claim on leadership and the party symbol by Ajit Pawar create a permanent fissure in the party or be resolved amicably? The nation watches with bated breath.
