A proposal has been prepared to name all 23 AIIMS, including Delhi, on the basis of local heroes, freedom fighters of the region, historical events of the region, monuments or their unique geographical identity, official sources said, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. According to the agency, an official said that at present there are some AIIMS which are operational, while others are being set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). All these are either known by their common name or are addressed by the name of that particular place. Therefore, the Union Health Ministry has prepared a proposal to give specific names to all 23 AIIMS. All 23 AIIMS including Delhi have been included in this.
According to the information, suggestions were sought to give special names to various AIIMS. It said that AIIMS can be linked to local or regional heroes, freedom fighters, the specific geographical identity of that region and major historical events or monuments of the region. Most of these 23 AIIMS have submitted the list of names. Not only this, AIIMS has suggested three to four names.
Six new AIIMS Bihar (Patna), Chhattisgarh (Raipur), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal), Odisha (Bhubaneswar), Rajasthan (Jodhpur) and Uttarakhand (Rishikesh) were approved in the first phase of PMSSY. Out of the 16 AIIMS established between 2015 and 2022, MBBS and outpatient department services have been introduced in 10 institutions, while only MBBS classes have been introduced in the other 2. The remaining 4 institutes are being prepared.
