NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankar has been elected as the 16th Vice President of India. He defeated Opposition Candidate Margaret Alva by 356 votes.
Dhankhar secured 528 votes over Opposition candidate Margaret Alva’s 182. As many as 725 MPs cast their ballot in Vice-Prez poll, which is 92.94 pc of total votes; 15 votes declared invalid.
Dhankhar, who is a lawyer by profession, joined politics in 1989. He became the governor of West Bengal in July 2019 and has made headlines since then over his tumultuous relations with the Mamata Banerjee government. He tendered his resignation as the Governor of West Bengal on July 17

He was closely associated with former deputy prime minister of India Chaudhary Devi Lal and followed his mentor when the latter walked out of the VP Singh government and became a union minister in 1990 in the minority government led by Chandra Shekhar.
He joined the Congress when PV Narasimha Rao became the prime minister. But with the rise of Ashok Gehlot in Rajasthan, he changed ships to the BJP.
Jagdeep Dhankar went on to become the Governor of West Bengal in 2019.
He has championed issues related to Other Backward Classes, including the grant of OBC status to the Jat community in Rajasthan.
In his personal life, Jagdeep Dhankhar is known as an avid reader and a sports aficionado and has been the President of the Rajasthan Olympic Association, and Rajasthan Tennis Association. He married Sudesh and they have a daughter together.
