Amazon: By the end of the year, Amazon Food, a food delivery business in India, will cease operations. The delivery service was only offered in Bengaluru and a few other locations when it was first introduced over two years ago as a direct competitor to Zomato and Swiggy. Amazon told the media that it had confirmed the development and that any choices had been taken as part of the yearly operating planning review procedure. The business shut down its ed-tech service in India earlier this month and let go of thousands of employees.
Amazon Food to cease operations on December 29
Amazon separately informed the sources that Amazon Food would cease operations on December 29. It stated in a statement, “We don’t take these decisions lightly. We are discontinuing these programmes in a phased manner to take care of current customers and partners and we are supporting our affected employees during this transition. Amazon remains focused on providing our growing customer base the best online shopping experience with the largest selection of products at great value and convenience.”
When Amazon Food first debuted in May 2022, the business said that people wanted the app to go beyond basic needs and include food delivery. Currently, there is a separate section for food and medications on the main Amazon app.

Amazon Food and Amazon Academy
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon Food and Amazon Academy made their debuts in India to assist customers in accessing necessary services at home. However, established competitors like Swiggy and Zomato as well as up-and-coming companies like Big Basket and Dunzo in the food delivery sector already controlled a large portion of the Indian industry. Byju’s had a sizable portion of the Indian market for ed-tech.
For instance, the Indian food sector is still incredibly competitive, and several industry titans, like Uber, have struggled to find success with Uber Eats. The Gururgram-based platform Grofers, which Zomato purchased in June 2022 and renamed as Blinkit, is one of many that were sold and changed their names.
As previously noted, the corporation fired roughly 10,000 workers earlier this month as a result of the hazy macroeconomic environment. The layoffs have also affected a number of Indian employees, and some of them are searching for work on LinkedIn to keep their H-1B visas.
