Amit Shah on BJP’s decision to drop incumbents in Karnataka, Change is the party’s ethos

Amit Shah

Amit Shah: When asked about why several incumbent MLAs were left off of the BJP’s candidate lists for the next elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded, “The Bharatiya Janata Party always believes in change.” Speaking on Saturday at the India Today Karnataka Roundtable 2023, Shah claimed that Karnataka, which will have elections on May 10, had experienced less change.

CM Jagadish Settar and Laxman Savadi left the BJP

The Home Minister’s remarks come in the wake of well-known politicians in Karnataka defecting from the party after being denied tickets for the forthcoming state elections. After being denied party seats, former chief ministers Jagadish Settar and Laxman Savadi left the party and joined the Congress. Amit Shah responded, ‘The party takes the decision based on a multitude of reasons. When asked why some leaders are removed off candidate lists during elections. These party leaders are all honourable and untarnished. We also explained to them the grounds for their ticket denials.’

Amit Shah Mocked Congress

The Congress was mocked by Shah when he said, “If Congress thinks they would win the election because Settar joined them, at least they realise that they couldn’t win alone. Additionally, only Settar had entered Congress; neither our party members nor our vote bank had done so. We will win back office with a sizable majority and the BJP is unbroken.” He said that there should be no assumption that the party leaders were “tainted,” citing the need for new blood and a generational shift as some of the reasons for the party’s choice.
