Nurse Molested in West Bengal: A shocking event that has further heightened public outrage comes just after a horrifying rape and murder at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata; the state government and police are already facing harsh criticism for their handling of these incidents, raising serious concerns about the safety and security of medical staff in the area. A deeply troubling incident occurred at the Ilambazar Health Centre in Birbhum, West Bengal, where a nurse was allegedly molested by a patient while she was on duty.
Incident Details – Nurse Allegedly Molested by Patient
While giving saline to a patient in the emergency room on Saturday night, a nurse at the Ilambazar Health Centre stated that she was harassed by a male patient. The patient had been brought to the health centre for treatment, and the nurse said that during the encounter, the patient touched her inappropriately and cursed at her.
“The male patient misbehaved with me and touched me inappropriately in my private parts while I was just following the doctor’s instructions. He also hurled verbal abuses at me,” the nurse shared, recounting her traumatic experience. She further expressed her frustration, highlighting the lack of security that allowed such an incident to occur. “Such incidents occur due to a lack of security. Otherwise, how can a patient dare to do such a thing to someone on duty in the presence of his family members who do nothing to stop him?” she questioned.
The incident, which occurred in the presence of the patient’s family members, sparked immediate tension at the health center. Hospital authorities promptly contacted the police, leading to the arrest of the accused patient.
Political Backlash and Social Media Outcry
The recent molestation incident has also fueled political controversy. Amit Malviya of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the Birbhum incident and shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), listing four incidents of sexual assault, including the Birbhum case, all reported on the first day of September in West Bengal. This post has sparked further debate and outrage on social media, with many calling for stricter safety measures in hospitals and a more robust response from the government.
Rising Concerns Over Hospital Safety
Shortly after the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, there has been another molestation instance. Many parties, including the BJP, have demanded justice and criticised the ruling Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for what they see as their perceived delay in resolving these cases in response to the finding of the doctor’s death, which has prompted widespread indignation and protests.
The shocking nature of these incidents has raised serious questions about the overall safety and security measures in state-run hospitals. In the case of the RG Kar Medical College, there have been reports suggesting that the accused, Sanjoy Roy, had unfettered access to various parts of the hospital at all times of the day. It has also been alleged that he would illegally arrange hospital beds and other facilities for patients in exchange for money, further complicating the situation and raising concerns about internal security lapses.
